The best play I saw this year was Evolution, performed by En Garde. It was part of the Fight Festival, and was not so much a traditional play as a montage of different fighting styles, and the stories of those who fought. Using stage combat as a form of art, it encompassed the discovery of the first first (by cavemen), to the battle of the OK Corral, to Samurai, to the modern era. It was a beautiful, skilled, and spectacular performance.

The best play I saw this year was South Pacific, I think. It's hard to choose. But it left a really big impression on me, and had me going through lots of emotions. I could connect with it. A very interesting and sad ( happy sometimes too ) plot.

I really liked Billy Elliot. I also liked the movie. The dancing was so good and their were so many funny parts.

hmm...this is a hard question! I'll break it down to two plays: Ruined and Twelfth Night. Ruined was incredibly intense, but amazing! And Twelfth Night was the best comedic Shakespeare I've ever seen! Not only was free for Shakespeare in the Park in an amazing outdoor theatre, but was really hilariously well done! I loved it! But both were really good in different ways, so there are the two best plays I saw in 2009.

this is a bit of a giveaway question because i haven't had the chance to see too many plays this year, so the one that stood out the most prominently in my mind out of the not-so-large selection was probably Our Town @ Barrow Theater. Thornton Wilder was a brilliant playwright, and seeing his words and vision come to life on stage is an entirely unique and breathtaking experience, particularly because the actors were so skilled, the directing so masterful and the manipulation of set so ingenious. I loved the performance, especially the second portion (after intermission).

The best play I saw in 2009 has to be hands down HAIR! It was the last Open Doors outing we had with David Zippel and I couldn't have asked for a more perfect event. I loved the music, the cast, the set...I truly felt like I was with them rebelling against the Vietnam War. I was even more happy when I heard that they won the Tony for Best Revival. If you haven't gotten a chance to see it...Go! :)

The best play I saw in 2009...hmm, probably A Boy and his Soul, Coleman Domingo's one-man show that was at the Vineyard theater this past fall. He's such a talented performer, and the piece was incredibly funny AND heartfelt!
Or, maybe the best play I saw was Exit the King this past spring with PxP....Well, one of the two.

The best play I'd seen in 2009 had to be Ruined. It was certainly emotionally intense and conveyed a truly powerful message about the social and political conditions of the war ridden Congo. The performances were phenomenal and I walked away having learned something about the human condition. It was really affective. I've seen great dramas and comedy's in 09 but nothing has left quite a mark as Ruined.

Well I saw this play called "The Lesbian Octagon" which was simply amazing. It showed the complex inter-dealings in the lesbian community, including a girl who kept trying to label everything (which her transvestite gf...bf? was not happy about), a girl doomed to be lonely, and a butch player.
It was very dramatic (in fact whenever drama would happen the actors would sing "drama mama...") but hilarious as well. I don't think it is running any more but the show I went to see was a one-day come back because so many people were trying to get tickets to see it.
<3 the play
